Last week Scottish post-rock legends and eardrum destroyers Mogwai earned their first-ever #1 on the NACC 200, emerging victorious from a fraught battle with fellow UK denizen, Cheltenham’s FKA Twigs. This week, the two switch and it’s Tahliah Debrett Barnett, the artist currently known as Formerly Known As Twigs earning their first-ever NACC 200 Chart-Topper! After notching a few Top 5 appearances throughout her career spanning 3 LPs, 3 EPs, and a mixtape, Twigs takes home the prize with her latest release EUSEXUA, on Young/Atlantic.
Chicago’s Horsegirl is no stranger to the NACC Weekly Recap, having earned the biggest debut a mere seven days ago as well as a Top 10 with their 2022 debut LP Versions of Modern Performance. This week sees them again earn the biggest jump into the top 10, as their new record Phonetics On And On (Matador) climbs from #37 last week all the way to the Top 5.
Though it was followed closely by a few other releases, the biggest hop/leap/jump onto the NACC 200 this week comes from the cult NYC duo Frog. Do you see what we did there? Are you sure you caught it? Ok, moving on. Their newest album, 1000 Variations on the Same Song, debuts on the Top 200 at #39 this week. We checked and the album only has 11 tracks and at least at first glance, they all sound at least nominally different, in case you found the album title a little daunting at first.
With this week’s biggest climb, Boulder’s The Velveteers are making noise on the charts. The trio, led by singer/baritone guitarist Demi Demitro, features two drummers and is signed to Dan Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound. Auerbach produced their latest record, with Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney dropping by—mostly for lunch and YouTube distractions. One visit did prove productive, as he co-wrote the lead single, “Go Fly Away.” A Million Knives jumps from #184 to #29 and looks poised to take a stab at the Top 20 or higher next week!
Saya Gray‘s second LP, (the presumably self-titled) SAYA, takes home top-added honors this week. This is her first release to garner this kind of attention on our charts, so we’re happy to introduce her to you with this newest record. Originally a touring bassist for over ten years before releasing her own music, she played alongside acts like Daniel Caesar, Willow Smith, and One Direction’s Liam Payne before taking it solo. SAYA is out now via Dirty Hit, who have also brought us records by NACC darling Beabadoobee and The 1975.
After seizing the top spot again last week Lucy Dacus‘ “Ankles” feels a little more comfortable, making it a fourth non-consecutive week at #1 on NACC Singles and increasing the lead even more over the previous topper, Japanese Breakfast. The dual single from Indianapolis’ Wishy earns the most adds from a single this week and is also the first taste of a new EP coming later this Spring. The band was formed in 2001 by Kevin Krauter (formerly of Hoops) and Nina Pitchkites and began to gain attention with a series of EPs, culminating in last year’s breakthrough Triple Seven (Winspear). Six other singles earned a spot on the NACC Top 30 adds including more much-anticipated music from Suki Waterhouse, Twin Shadow, Fontaines DC, and more!
