MD of the Month:
Lacie Drewes
KRSC “RSU Radio” Claremore, OK
How long have you been involved with KRSC and how did you first hear about the station?
I have been involved with KRSC for 2 years now. I volunteered for a couple of semesters before being offered a job here at the station. I started as a content creator, was promoted to traffic director, and then promoted to music director! I first heard about the station in a class taught by my manager. He told us that the station needed volunteers and I applied immediately, I had no idea I would love it so much.
Tell us about the duties of your job and what part of it you love the most and what is most challenging.
There are many things that go into being a music director. From clearing music sent in by promoters and musicians, keeping in contact with them, managing music logs, and so on. The part I love the most is the opportunities; through this position, I’ve been able to attend free concerts, receive merch, and talk to the musicians themselves for which I’m very appreciative. The most challenging part is keeping up with the influx of music, it’s never ending!! It’s a good problem to have because I love listening to it all.
What advice can you offer other MDs regarding the ways you encourage your DJs to play the new music the station receives from labels and promoters?
Something I like to do is reach out to different hosts of our shows and send them the music I’ve been sent that fits their show’s sound. Also, in meetings I like to share with everyone the music I’m currently listening to (which is almost always stuff we are sent) and tell them about new releases I enjoyed.
What ways does the station reach out to/interact with the community and work to grow your audience/footprint?
Our station is heavily involved with our community. We discuss local events, promote non-profits in town, create PSAs, attend on-campus events, and so on. We also like to partner with local venues, play music at events, and spread the word. We really put an emphasis on playing local artists and every year we hold a concert-type event on campus featuring local artists. Through partnering with locals, it helps spread the word about our station while helping our community.
What was your favorite album of the past year or so and why did you like it so much?
This is a tough question! I think I’ll go with Cherry Glazerr’s new album I Don’t Want You Anymore, recently I’ve been digging the indie rock sound and that album definitely leans into indie/alt-rock. The singles made me fall in love and the rest of the album sealed the deal for me.
Do you have a favorite artist or album you never get tired of listening to?
There are definitely a couple of artists I never tire of but I’ll go ahead say Arctic Monkeys. I recently saw them in Dallas and it was amazing, I was hoping it would never end and I can’t wait to see them again. I don’t think I could ever get tired of their album AM, which is the first album of theirs I bought.
Who is an artist or band totally outside the realm of the music you play on KRSC that people might be surprised to know you love?
My favorite band of all time is actually The Beatles!! Most of the music I listen to is modern, alternative, and indie so when I reveal they’re my favorite band, people are usually taken aback.
If you had the power to instantly change one thing going on in the world at the moment, what would it be?
I would change all of the hatred and divisiveness that’s happening around the world.
What event or person in your life would you say has shaped you the most as a person?
The person who shaped me most is my sister, Paiton. We are 8 years apart so at times she has felt more like a parental figure than a sibling. She’s my sister and my protector, and I’ve always tried to be the same for her.
If you could choose, what time period in the past would you most want to travel back to visit and why?
I’d like to visit the 60s just to experience the change in culture and the amazing music.
Do you have a favorite restaurant in town that you recommend people try?
I would recommend one of the local Mexican restaurants, called El Banquete. They almost always have great deals going on and who doesn’t love some good Mexican food?
What in your life brings you the most joy?
It’s hard to narrow down so I’ll give you 3 things; my boyfriend, my dogs, and theatre.
Lightning Round:
Dog or Cat? Dogs
Morning Person or Night Owl? Night owl
City or Country? City
Beach or Mountains? Beach
Watch TV or Read A Book? Watch TV
Sunny or Rainy? Rainy
Restaurant or Home Cooking? Depends, usually home cooking
Pants or Shorts? Pants
Warm or Cold drinks? Cold!
Do you have any current favorite TV shows you’re enjoying/binging? How about a movie (new or old) that you’ve watched recently that you would recommend?
Me and my boyfriend have been binging Hell’s Kitchen nonstop, we live for the drama. As for movies, the most recent one I watched was Rocky Horror Picture Show for a Halloween party, it’s a cult classic!
Finally, If you could have a lifetime supply of anything, what would it be?
Can I say money? If not, I would have to say a lifetime supply of Taco Bell would be pretty cool.
