COMMUNITY
Genre DJ of the Month (Jazz) | Gary Walker, WBGO Newark
“Young artists get good exposure here, through performance and coverage on the WBGO website, very creatively handled by former New York Times jazz writer, and author, Nate Chinen.”
MD of the Month | Kari Hedlund, KAXE/KBXE Grand Rapids
“KAXE is a community radio station that was the first rural public station in the nation. The CPB wouldn’t fund it right away because they thought they would be ‘broadcasting to a bunch of gophers’. Ha.”
Genre DJ of the Month | Karen Rakos, KEUL Girdwood, AK
“KEUL is a community radio station completely run by volunteers in the small resort town of Girdwood, Alaska. Founded by Lewis Leonard, KEUL hit the airwaves as a pirate station in 1997. The FCC shut the operation down, but by the summer of 1998, KEUL was fully licensed and back on the air legally.”
August MD of the Month | Troy Lemberg, CFUV Victoria, BC
“Most of my ‘best’ shows have always been stuff I have seen in my early 20s, but Dec 2017 I saw Shabazz Palaces for the first time and it was otherworldly. Definitely top 3 or 5 performances of all time.”
Industry Interview with James Adair, Moniker Promo
“I’m from Australia and was at University studying Economics, which I hated so I thought what was the most furthest thing away from Economics…Music.”
Genre DJ of the Month | Al Wex, WSUW Whitewater
“The first two Chemical Brothers CD’s always stand tall with me. I have a bunch of 90’s Breakbeat & Electronic compilations that I play occasionally. In Hip Hop, Wu Tang’s 36 Chambers, Big L’s Lifestyles of Da Poor & Dangerous, Tribe Called Quest’s early years rank high with me.”
July MD of the Month | Amy Presley, KACV Amarillo
“Amarillo College signed on KACV in 1976. It originally played classical music and eventually students started their own specialty shows. In the 90’s the station changed to alternative and has been that format since.”
Industry Interview with Phillipe Roberts, Marauder
“College/Community Radio matters because we need youthful energy contributing to what ends up on the airwaves! They’re always hungry for new sounds and often give us fresh insights into the music we’re working on. I’ve gotten tons of recommendations from college MDs that have shaped my own tastes. It’s a critical, symbiotic relationship.”
Genre DJ of the Month (Metal) | Erika Bass, WKNC Raleigh
“I host a show on WKNC called The Saw’s Butcher Shop. I am known as The Saw, the Master Butcher. My show is divided into two time-slots: The Bone Cruncher on Friday’s from noon-1pm where I play local North Carolina metal bands, and The House of Horrors on Friday night’s from 6-8pm where I play all genres of metal (metalcore, deathcore, hardcore, death metal, black metal, and djent metal, etc.).”
