KRKQ – Mountain Chill
This was one of those years where “chill” stopped behaving like a genre and started acting more like a emotional direction. Neo-soul, post-rock, ambient, left-field electronics, it all worked together. Artists leaned into warmth without getting sleepy, and experimentation without going over the top. There were bits of nostalgia in the corners, but mostly I feel like something new is building. If you want the full deep dive, my Top 25 is up on our station site.

Amazing year, especially for indie and self released artists. Lots and LOTS of new music that sounds retro or from a bygone era, but fresh. I think this might be one of the things that defines this decade. Self Released, smaller labels, and back to an organic sound. It’s even hit mainstream pop with songs like Die With A Smile & others. Less autotune, more raw talent.

2025 has enjoyed a powerful movement of new, progressive styles this year. Plenty of artists who have been experimenting with their sound have started to find their groove, and there have also been plenty of interesting new names popping up in the sphere. I’ve been enjoying a lot of music different from my typical fancy, and I am truly excited to see where this momentum leads us in the next half of the decade.Particularly, I’ve found myself fascinated with new blends of genres and styles. Danny Brown’s “Stardust” and Flume & JPEGMAFIA’s “We Live in a Society” are good examples. Furthermore, I’ve been interested in Bad Self Portraits and Wednesday!

This may be the year that we left the sad, quiet music of the pandemic in the rearview and returned to noisy, boisterous rock. So many great albums this year, it’s hard to get down to ten. Special mentions go out to releases from Sharp Pins (TWO great albums!), The Hives, Arc de Soleil, Glare, Press Club, Far Caspian, Jeffrey Runnings, The High Water Marks, Dear Boy, and Young Gun Silver Fox!

There’s always so much amazing music coming out all the time that never makes it to our inboxes and a lot of it lives outside the algorithms. Hey, radio friends.W e all made it through another year. Let’s take a pause – breath – celebrate. 2025, huh? Well, not my best year, but I learned a shiton. I will leave this year better than I istarted it. But for real, 2025 kicked my ass. It left some bruises, but they’re fading. However, the lessons learned remained. So, I’m calling that a win. As always, music was at the epicenter of it all. It was the light that illuminated my breakthroughs, the glue that held me together during my breakdowns, and the comforting presence of an old friend. As my (inner)worldview has grown so have my musical tastes. This has helped bring back the joy and excitement of new musical discoveries. Pressing play and feeling seen and heard like never before. All from music I didn’t even know existed. But it can’t eber be unheard or forgotten; it’s a part of me now. I’m lucky enough to be able to share that with the universe via broadcasted radio frequencies and ones and zeros floating in the digital ether. Thank you to all those that are a part of that cycle. From the tireless promo folks peddling the new-new, to the intrepid DJs/MDS filtering the static, and the beloved listeners contributing time and money keeping it all flowing. Here’s my list, in no order. Till ext year — adrian

Reviewing what I wrote last year for this – wow what a difference a year makes as I am healing and doing much better. Just like Mike D (Beastie Boys) said “I’ve been through many times in which I thought I might lose it, the only thing that saved me has always been music”. 2025 had some certified classics and it was hard to narrow this down without mentioning a few singles. Favorite singles/songs from this year: Fontaines D.C. – “It’s Amazing To Be Young”, Double Wish – “Seatbelt (Deeper Ecstasy)”, Ela Minus – “Broken”, Natalie Bergman – “Gunslinger”, Water From Your Eyes- “Nights In Armor” and so many more. It should be noted that Fishbone returned with a new lineup and released one of the most important politically charged albums of the year and their best since the early 1990s, “Last Call in America (ft. George Clinton)” is the soundtrack what is happening in the U.S.A. Lastly, huge shout out to the On-Air Director at WODU and all of the new DJs!

I came into 2025 still absolutely in love with ‘Romance’ by Fontaines DC, and for me, nothing this year quite like that. That’s not to say there weren’t some gems I had on repeat. FWIW, I’m old enough to have seen trends in music, cycle around once or twice and I can’t help but feel like I have been here before: in this place that seems quiet just before a revolutionary music storm. Between AI, and artists being screwed over by big industry (you know who I mean) I predict 2026 will see an indie evolution revolution to a new level. That’s my wish. Final note: Some really great stuff just hit my inbox recently, such as Miki Berenyi Trio. Let’s go 2026!!
