“Excellent year for music, especially in the dance scene. There was something in the air in early 2023 that felt like a revival of classic sounds with a new twist. Really all throughout the year we saw plenty of artists–old and new–embrace and combine newer sounds without straying too far from their original style, and updated discographies that felt just so fresh. I discovered a new side of my own personal taste as well, particularly in the latin-influenced dance genres (big shout out to Mexico City based artist Sinego, who does make my list below!).”

“A record store I frequent purchased a massive collection of music from a customer who always had the dream of opening a record store, so I invested A LOT of 2023 to older music. But even before that happened, the sheer number of tentpole releases or “artists to watch” felt staggering. I still haven’t had a chance to listen to several albums I’m sure would have made it to this list. The struggle is real! This list is in no particular order.”

“First, let’s all celebrate making it thru another year. We did it! Once again this year was full of really good music. My musical tastes are evolving as I get older. I find my ears drifting towards the stranger, more relaxed, trippier, and dare I say it, more organic. It’s hard to say what the musical stand out was this year; It was the year of the breakbeat (Junglist Summer). De La Soul is now fully digital. There was a bunch of bangers made by people with instruments. Global riddims are still ruling the charts. Regardless of where music is going, I’m still down for it all. So here it is, in no particular order.”

“I’m the kind of person who can make a list for just about anything, but top 10 albums of 2023? Nearly impossible! This year was also particularly special for me as it was my first year working as MD at our station! I had a great time discovering new artists, and I was also spoiled by a bunch of new releases from some of my all time favourites. Let’s start with Ryuichi Sakamoto, Sparks and Beverly Glenn-Copeland – their releases confirmed their place as masters of skill and expression, and presented us with some of the strongest works of their career. I also want to put a spotlight on some newer artists such as George Clanton, Tkay Maidza and Yeule whose inspiring works continue to push boundaries to create raw, genuine music. These were the albums that kept me company and will stay in my personal library for well past 2024! Here’s to a great year in music!”
