Listen to NACC's MD Takeover on Spotify!

How long have you been involved with KRTU and how did you first hear about the station?

I started working at KRTU in the fall of 2022 as a sophomore in college. I first heard about the station through a campus tour I did at Trinity University as a high school senior, but it wasn’t until the end of my first year that I really thought about interning at KRTU!

Tell us about the duties of your job and what part of it you love the most and what is most challenging.

My main role at KRTU is going through new music that we get sent and adding it to our station. I also communicate with promoters about up and coming music and cover concerts! I also report the NACC Top 30 and Top Adds charts. My favorite part of the job, however, is being able to listen to new music and discover new artists, who I never would’ve heard about otherwise. It can be pretty challenging keeping up with all the new music, but it’s also great to be able to go through all of it.

What advice can you offer other MDs regarding the ways you encourage your DJs to play the new music the station receives from labels and promoters?

Looking for a variety of music and never judging based on covers, in order to give DJ’s a wide variety of music to choose from.

What ways does the station reach out to/interact with the community and work to grow your audience/footprint?

Interacting with the community is a huge part of KRTU and a main focus for us. Our listeners and community members are extremely important and keep us going. Some of the ways we reach out to our community are through membership drives, events, and monthly newsletters.

What was your favorite album of the past year or so and why? Is there a 2023 release on the horizon you are eagerly awaiting?

Cuts & Bruises by Inhaler has been, by far, my favorite album of the year so far. I absolutely adore every song on the album, and could listen to it for ages. With pop and rock influences, this album has been perfect for me and has been playing on repeat. Hydranism by Oracle Sisters, which came out earlier this year, was an album that I was really excited about, and it’s safe to say that it didn’t disappoint!

Do you have a favorite artist or album you never get tired of listening to?

Jeff Buckley is one of my all time favorite artists! Not only are his vocals amazing, but his writing makes everything feel so real. I’m a sucker for good lyricism and Jeff Buckley is the epitome of it.

Who is an artist or band totally outside the realm of the music you play on KRTU that people might be surprised to know you love?

Although maybe not completely surprising, One Direction has been one of my favorite bands since I was a child. I grew up listening to them and have been attached ever since. Although their music definitely isn’t indie, they’re always up there on my spotify charts.

If you had the power to instantly change one thing going on in the world at the moment, what would it be?

I would reverse climate change! It’s so heartbreaking to see our planet fall apart, and I would definitely change that in an instant.

What event or person in your life would you say has shaped you the most as a person?

My parents and siblings have definitely been the most influential people in my life. They are there for me 24/7 and have helped me become the person I am today.

If you could choose, what time period in the past would you most want to travel back to visit and why?

I would definitely choose the 70’s purely because of the music and fashion. David Bowie, Elton John, Abba, and so many more artists made this decade unforgettable.

Do you have a favorite restaurant in town (dine-in or take out) that you recommend people try?

El Milagrito Café has the best Mexican food!

What in your life brings you the most joy?

This may seem predictable, but it’s music! Music has never failed to bring my mood up.

Lightning Round:

Dog or Cat? Both!
Morning Person or Night Owl? Night owl
City or Country? City
Beach or Mountains? Beach
Watch TV or Read A Book? Read a book
Sunny or Rainy? Rainy
Restaurant or Home Cooking? Restaurant
Pants or Shorts? Pants
Warm or Cold drinks? Cold

Do you have any current favorite TV shows you’re enjoying/binging? How about a movie (new or old) that you’ve watched recently that you would recommend?

I’ve been watching It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia lately, and I definitely recommend it if you want a good laugh.

Finally, July is usually one of the hottest months of the year and you are in Texas to boot. What do you do to keep cool this time of year?

Swimming is the best way to keep cool during the summer. The cool water feels so nice on a day where the weather gets up to 105 degrees. Laying by the pool while drinking an iced tea is the only answer!
