The NACC Community’s Top 10 Favorite Records of 2023
Radio music directors, DJs, promoters, publicists, artists, labels and more share their personal Top 10 favorite records released in 2023.
MD of the Month | Katie Clayton, WUNH Durham, NH
“My favorite album of the past year was probably Wednesday’s “Rat Saw God.” I am OBSESSED with their stage presence, and as a southern girl, I love their sonic blend of heavier guitar with twangy country. Asheville’s music scene is awesome. I think the album(s) I’m most excited for in 2024 is the new Sleater-Kinney album or the new Katy Kirby album!”
MD of the Month | Lacie Drewes, RSU Radio Claremore, OK
“Our station is heavily involved with our community. We discuss local events, promote non-profits in town, create PSAs, attend on-campus events, and so on. We also like to partner with local venues, play music at events, and spread the word. We really put an emphasis on playing local artists and every year we hold a concert-type event on campus featuring local artists. Through partnering with locals, it helps spread the word about our station while helping our community.”
Industry Interview with Adam Dawson, Broken Jukebox Media
“Around 2005 or so I started promoting shows at a dive bar in my hometown, so that I could see songwriters that I loved without driving an hour to Columbus. That led me to starting my own blog/ podcast in around 2007 as a way to justify my record collection.”
MD of the Month | Dawn Anderson, KBMF Butte, MT
“KBMF does so much for and with the community! We host speakers, broadcast our county’s weekly Council of Commissioners meeting, host all of the city’s holiday parades, and host a community events calendar on our website. Still, I’m all ears when it comes to advice for getting folx to listen to terrestrial radio in 2023!”
MD of the Month | Anna Creech, WRIR Richmond
“I went to a Mennonite university for my undergraduate, and that’s where my budding love for multi-voice-part singing really bloomed. (Mennonites generally don’t use instrumentation in worship services and sing in four-part harmony.) 25 years later and I’m still singing in choral groups.”
MD of the Month | Benoit Poirier, CISM Montréal, QC
“10 000 gecs is undoubtedly a whole lot of fun! But I’m going with Poison Ruïn’s Härvest – I love everything about it: the medieval themes, the gritty yet catchy tunes, the idiosyncratic hardcore playing, the dude in a chainmail on their artwork. I’m thrilled by the upcoming local releases over here: Yocto’s Zepta Supernova, Laurence-Anne’s Oniromancie, Crabe’s Visite du temple inné, Population II’s Électrons libres du québec, Arielle Soucy’s Il n’y a rien que je ne suis pas + Élégie’s Romantisme. ”
Industry Interview with Elena Rodrigo, The Music Joint
“Latin alternative music is so broad and constantly evolving, and very few DJs that are not of latin descendant or speak Spanish, consider it in their rock or indie music shows. They would be surprised of the great music that is out there that fits very well in their show format, but because of the language, they just don’t bother to listen to. College radio stations are still the only stations that are actually playing some of this music.”
MD of the Month | Sabrina Enriquez, KRTU San Antonio, TX
“My main role at KRTU is going through new music that we get sent and adding it to our station. I also communicate with promoters about up and coming music and cover concerts! I also report the NACC Top 30 and Top Adds charts. My favorite part of the job, however, is being able to listen to new music and discover new artists, who I never would’ve heard about otherwise. It can be pretty challenging keeping up with all the new music, but it’s also great to be able to go through all of it.”
