Clairo has done it! As we talked about here last week, she has a fun little pattern that has formed with her three #1 records on the NACC 200. Her 2019 debut LP, Immunity, spent one week at #1. Her second album, 2021’s Sling, spent two weeks on top. And now her third LP, Charm (Virgin), has racked up three weeks at #1. She’s also one of just two artists (the other being Soccer Mommy) who have reached the top of the NACC 200 with their first three studio albums. We’re guessing Clairo would be perfectly fine messing this neat pattern up by spending a fourth week at #1 next week. And with her point total getting close to double the points of the #2 record from Dr. Dog, we’re guessing that may happen.
Three albums reach the NACC Top 10 this week. One we featured here last week comes from Los Campesinos! They rise 18-9 and score their second Top 10 on the NACC 200. Making an even higher jump into the top tier is NYC-based duo Cults. Formed ifn 2010 by Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion, the two were featured here two weeks ago when their seventh LP, To The Ghosts (Cults/Imperial), was the most-added album of the week. This week they jump from 16-7 on the NACC 200 scoring their second straight Top 10-peaking album on our chart. They also rise 22-5 at NACC NEXT.
The biggest climber into the Top 10 this week belongs to last week’s most added album. It comes from Chicago quintet, Brigitte Calls Me Baby. Their debut studio album, The Future Is Our Way Out (ATO), debuted at #67 on last week’s NACC 200 and this week soars straight up to #10. The band starts a tour of mainly the Eastern side of the US next month with things kicking off in Minneapolis on September 6 and ending with their two most Western dates on the current itinerary, October 1 & 2 in Colorado.
A band who is the very definition of prolific is back. San Francisco’s Osees formed in 1997 but didn’t release any music until 2003. In the 21 years since, they have released 29 LPs. 2020 alone saw them release four albums! They also love to change the spelling of their name. Their most recent seven albums, including their latest, SORCS 80 (Castle Face), have come under Osees, but previous releases have been put out as Oh Sees, Thee Oh Sees, The Oh Sees, and OCS. Whatever the spelling, they’ve enjoyed lots of success at NACC and this new album is adding to that cannon. Their 182-18 leap this week is the third-biggest of the year. A good start for a band looking for their third #1 here!
Perhaps even surpassing Osees prolific output is Melbourne, Australia six-piece King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard. They formed 13 years after Osees and have, in twelve years of output, releases an astounding 26 LPs. And they did Osees one better with five albums released in 2022! Their latest, Flight b741 (out on their new label p(doom)), collects 60 Top 10 Adds, the most of any of the 100 official NACC Adds this week. The album simultaneously lands this week’s highest debut, leaping aboard the chart at #23. They’re on the hunt for their third NACC 200 chart-topper.
Karen O & Danger Mouse enjoy a second week at #1 on the NACC Singles Chart this week. “Super Breath” is part of a 5-year anniversary re-issue of their 2019 collaborative album, Lux Prima, on September 19. Chaz Bear aka Toro Y Moi has been teasing his eighth LP, Hole Erth (due September 6) for a while now. The third & fourth advance tracks from the album, “Hollywood” feat. Benjamin Gibbard b/w “CD-R” are bundled together and scores the most-added single of the week. It’s one of four singles to reach the NACC 200 Top 30 Adds Chart this week. The others belong to Jordana, Laurie Anderson, and Phantogram.
