One trio replaces another at the top of the NACC 200 this week. After two weeks at #1, Khruangbin steps down to #2 (their fifth cumulative week at the runner-up slot) and Chicago’s Dehd scores their first NACC 200 #1. Those who believe the band simply don’t know how to spell the word ‘dead’ would be grossly mistaken. Formed in 2015 as a side-project for Jason Balla of the Dream Eagles and Emily Kempf of Heavy Dreams, they simply combined those two band names and quickly abbreviated it, taking the first letter of each word to come up with Dehd. The band’s fifth LP, Poetry (Fat Possum), zips 5-1 this week. They also rise from 3-1 on the NACC NEXT Chart.
Dehd’s biggest threat for the top spot next week looks like it will come from last week’s most added album from Boston-formed, Brooklyn-residing band, Crumb. Their third LP, AMAMA (out on their own Crumb Records), explodes up the chart this week, rising 37-3. It’s the biggest climber of our the new records in the Top 10 this week. This is the second time they’ve made the biggest climb into the top tier (though this climb was much bigger than the previous one in 2019).
Honorable mention this week goes to Of Montreal (making the highest debut of the week on the NACC 200 at #53) and Lightning Bug (making the biggest climb on the chart, up 150-66). With those lower moves though, we’ll feature two artists making noteworthy moves higher on the chart. One is Los Angeles singer/songwriter Hana Vu. Her fourth album, Romanticism (Ghostly International/Secretly Group), which was the week’s most-added album three weeks ago, makes the biggest move within the Top 10 of the NACC 200 this week, climbing 9-5. She’s also up 8-6 at NACC NEXT.
The second new album to reach the NACC Top 10 this week comes from English octet Ibibio Sound Machine. The band’s roots took hold in 2010 when a trio of producers formed the band in London. They approached singer Eno Williams to contribute vocals for the project. Only one of those original producers (Max Grunhard) remains, but over the course of the last 10 years, ever since they put out their first album in 2014, the band have released five studio albums. Their latest, Pull The Rope (Merge), advances from 19-10 this week while also topping three of our genre charts: World, Electronic, and R&B/Soul.
Formed in 2011 in Brooklyn, NY as a side project for Soft Black and Beach Fossils member Zachary Cole Smith, DIIV (originally called Dive and still pronounced that way) quickly became a full-fledged quartet that includes Smith’s childhood friend Andrew Bailey. The band have released four LPs, including their latest, Frog In Boiling Water (Fantasy Records). The album collects 63 Top 10 Adds (the most this week) and opens on the NACC 200 at #91.
This week, Irish quartet Fontaines DC spends a fifth straight week at #1 on NACC Singles with “Starbuster.” In doing so, they now have the longest-running chart-topping single of 2024. The song will be included on their fourth album, Romance, due August 23. This week’s most-added single is a rare Top-10-overall-adding song placing at #9 on the overall adds chart. Aussie quartet Amyl And The Sniffers leads new singles from Clairo, Ginger Root, Nada Surf, and Skegss (who also make the NACC 200 Top 30 Adds Chart) with “U Should Not Be Doing That.” For now, it’s a stand-alone single that they will no doubt be playing when they open for Foo Fighters at a handful of shows this summer.
