Father John Misty enjoys a fifth straight week at #1

The battle for #1 this week between Father John Misty and Franz Ferdinand was extremely close. Ultimately, the gap between #1 and #2 on the NACC 200 was a minuscule eight points (the smallest gap since August of last year). Franz Ferdinand gave it a go, closing the gap from 19% behind to just .7%. And they did get to #1 on NACC NEXT this week. But Josh Tillman, who records as Father John Misty, held firm and enjoys a fifth straight week at #1 with Mahashmashana (Sub Pop). He also moves into the Top 10 of the artists with the most cumulative weeks at #1 on the NACC 200 with nine total weeks between his three chart-toppers.

Two new albums reach the NACC Top 10 this week along with one album that re-enters the top tier. Mercury bounces right back from #11 to #8 after peaking at #8 two weeks ago. And Ethel Cain rises 14-10, reaching the NACC Top 10 for the first time. But it’s British singer, songwriter, dancer, and actress Tahliah Barnett, aka FKA Twigs, scoring the biggest climb into the top tier, sailing ahead 42-5 with her third studio album, EUSEXUA (Young/Atlantic). This is her third straight NACC Top 10, following her sophomore studio album, Magdalene, in 2019 and her 2022 mixtape, Caprisongs.

Boonton, NJ quartet High has a name that works perfectly for a band enjoying this week’s highest debut on the NACC 200. High (stylized High.) first debuted in 2021 when their creative nucleus, Christian Castan and Bridget Bakie, met while playing the DIY and college circuit around New Jersey. Their debut EP, Bomber, was released in 2023. High has now released their second EP, Come Back Down (their first on Kanine), and it leaps onto the chart at #21 allowing us to feature them for the first time on the Weekly NACC Chart Recap.

Louisville, KY quartet Charm School is another band featured for the first time this week. Fronted by Andrew Sellers, who has been making music for about a decade under the name Andrew Rinehart, Sellers has now formed Charm School which showcases a darker and more aggressive sound than his previous work. Their debut LP, Debt Forever (Surprise Mind), sails ahead from 171-32 on the NACC 200, the biggest climb on this week’s chart.

Taking the most-added honors this week is the English electronic duo Maribou State. Started in 2011 by schoolmates Chris Davids and Liam Ivory, the two have remixed music for other artists like The Alpines and Lana Del Rey, as well as creating their own. Hallucinating Love (Ninja Tune) is their fourth studio album and collects 50 Top 10 Adds. In addition to debuting at #172 on the NACC 200, they also score the #1 Electronic Add this week with their album.

Lucy Dacus pushed Japanese Breakfast out of the top spot at NACC Singles last week with her new track, “Ankles.” The gap between the two was a slim 12 points. This week the gap is a razor-thin one point! But that’s all it takes for Dacus to enjoy a well-deserved second week on top. Her fourth solo album, Forever Is A Feeling, is due March 28. A whopping eight singles place on the NACC 200 Top 30 Adds Chart this week. Tops among them is Mamalarky with an impressive 41 Top 10 Adds and a Top 5 overall placement. “Feels So Wrong” helps announce an upcoming Spring Tour with Hinds. Also reaching the NACC 200 Top 30 Adds Chart with new singles are A.L. West, Black Country, New Road, Sunflower Bean, Momma, J Mascis, Julien Baker & Torres, and The Taxpayers.
