Japanese Breakfast Reclaims #1 on NACC 200

Falling from #1 on the NACC 200 doesn’t always mean an album’s run at the top is over. Ten times previously, we’ve seen artists relinquish #1 only to reclaim it again. Most recently, Sufjan Stevens did it at the beginning of 2024. But Japanese Breakfast does get a special mention as now just the second of those 11 rebounding chart toppers to step way for two weeks and then return to #1. All the others were away for just one week. Until now, only Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings had done it back in 2018. This week, For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women), out on Dead Oceans, rises back 2-1 to claim a fifth cumulative week at #1. This matches the previous five-week run they enjoyed on top in 2021. With 10 total weeks at #1 on the NACC 200, that moves them into a tie for sixth place (along with St. Vincent, Ty Segall, & Bully) for the most weeks on top.

No new albums have reached the NACC 200 Top 10 this week, but L.A. Witch (who we featured here two weeks ago when they first reached the top tier) has risen back to their previous peak, up 11-10. But we’ve decided to feature the artist right behind them at #11. Virginia-formed and Seattle-based band Car Seat Headrest soars from #104-11 this week, missing the Top 10 by only three points. Formed in 2010 as a solo project for Will Barnes (who goes by Will Toledo), CSH released eight albums. In 2015, the project became a full-fledged group and released five more LPs, including their latest, The Scholars (Matador). The album is now a heartbeat away from becoming their third straight NACC 200 Top 10-peaking album.

Making the highest debut on the NACC 200 is Ann Arbor, MI native and current Brooklyn resident, Mei Semones. She has released three EPs — two in 2022 and another in 2024 that enjoyed the biggest climb on the NACC 200 the week after it debuted on the chart. Paste Magazine highlighted her in their Best Of What’s Next feature in March 2024. Now her debut LP, Animaru (Bayonet), continues to make good on that praise as it leaps aboard the NACC 200 at #23. It’s the only debut inside the Top 40 this week.

The fastest-climbing album this week on the NACC 200 belongs to the Boston-formed quartet Model/Actriz, though they now reside in Brooklyn. The band formed in 2016 but went on a two-year hiatus soon after. They began playing together again in 2019 and released a highly acclaimed debut LP in 2023. Their second album, Pirouette (True Panther/Dirty Hit), is seeing similar praise and made a big jump on the NACC 200 this week—from #134 to #30. That gives us our first chance to feature them in our weekly chart recap.

This week’s most-added release comes from Adult Mom. Started as a solo bedroom project for musician Stevie Knipe in 2012, it has become a full-fledged band along the way with the addition of guitarist Allegra Eidinger and drummer Olivia Battell. Their fourth LP, Natural Causes (Epitaph), collected 52 Top 10 Adds this week and debuted at #139 on the NACC 200. The album is now aiming to become their second to reach the Top 10.

Wet Leg spends a fifth consecutive week at #1 on the NACC Singles chart with “Catch These Fists,” tying the longest run at the top for 2025. Lucy Dacus spent five weeks at #1 earlier this year with “Ankles.” This is the first song from Wet Leg’s second LP, moisturizer, due July 11. Five singles (out of the 47 that went for adds this week) reach the NACC 200 Top 30 Adds Chart. Trying for top honors is Jayden Binnix, who records as Black Polish. “Be With You” is the first single released since their 2024 debut LP. Aussie band Parcels also ties for top singles add. Their song “Yougotmefeeling” is the third preview track from their third studio album, LOVED, due September 12. Also making the NACC 200 Top 30 Adds this week are singles from Guerrilla Toss, Matt Berninger & Ceylon Sailor.
