The battle for #1 between Weyes Blood and Little Simz extended to a third round this week. Little Simz gained ground the previous two weeks she was at #2 and this week she sneaks past Weyes Blood to grab her first #1 on the NACC 200. The London-born singer, rapper, and actress reached the Top 10 of the NACC 200 in 2021 with Sometimes I Might Be Introvert. Her fifth LP, NO THANK YOU (Forever Living Originals/AWAL), which rises 2-1 this week, has also topped NACC NEXT and NACC Non-Comm, is currently #1 at Hip Hop, and just rose to #1 this week at NACC Canadian as well.
Three artists reach the Top 10 of the NACC 200 this week including the two highest debuts on the chart last week. July Talk climbs 14-7 and The Arcs jumps 17-3. But it’s last week’s most-added album from King Tuff that makes the most significant move. King Tuff is Vermont native Kyle Thomas and his fifth LP, Smalltown Stardust (Sub Pop), leaps 69-6. This is the third week-in-a-row that the biggest climber into the Top 10 comes from outside the Top 50.
Our biggest debut this week comes from the supergroup Boygenius. Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacas recently returned with three new simultaneously released singles that preview their upcoming debut LP, The Record. All three songs are receiving substantial airplay with resulted in their placement at #13 on the NACC 200 this week. The full record will be released on March 31.
Garage punk trio Bass Drum Of Death scores the biggest climb on the NACC 200 this week. This is the first time we’ve had the opportunity to feature the Oxford, MS band that was formed in 2007 by singer and songwriter John Barrett as a one-man-band. Bass Drum Of Death became a full band with their third album. This week their fifth LP, Say I Won’t (Fat Possum), races from 181-27 on the chart. It’s the biggest climb on the NACC 200 so far this year.
This week’s most-added album also happens to be the most-added record of 2023 up to this point. Scottish trio Young Fathers is back with its fourth LP, Heavy Heavy (Ninja Tune). Formed in 2008, the Young Fathers have waited nearly five years from their previous album’s release (the biggest gab between records for the band). The new album, which collected 77 Top 10 Adds this week, is the second-best reviewed release of the young new year according to Metacritic.
Arlo Parks has the #1 single on the NACC Singles Chart again this week and it’s not even close. Her record-breaking single, “Weightless,” is the highest charting ever on the NACC 200 and is now the only one to spend more than one week in the Top 10. This song hails from her second LP, My Soft Machine, due May 26. The most-added single this week comes from Brooklyn musician Lauren Denitzio who records as Worriers. “Pollen In The Air” is the first preview of the artist’s fourth LP, Warm Blanket, which will be released on April 7.
The current Top 5 overall NACC Adds, the genre chart-toppers, and the week’s most-added genre records are included below. There are new #1s at NACC NEXT, NACC Non-Comm, NACC Canadian, World, Electronic, and R&B/Soul.
