Sleater-Kinney may be ceding ground each week to a wave of albums that are encroaching on them like a pack of creatures in an Aliens movie. But with flamethrowers in hand, they aren’t ready to relinquish their hold on the top spot quite yet! Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein’s eleventh LP, Little Rope (Loma Vista/Concord), enjoys a fourth straight week at #1 this week, while also doing the same at NACC NEXT. They do have their first serious competition for the top spot next week lined up behind them though. Ty Segall (holding at #2) is now just 100 points behind. For reference, he was almost 500 points away last week. Also hot on his heals is The Last Dinner Party (up 8-3) and J Mascis (up 10-4). Should be a fun battle next week!
Just one new album reaches the NACC Top 10 this week. It’s last week’s most added album, Harm’s Way (Carpark), from Ducks Ltd. The Toronto-based duo of Tom McGreevy and Evan Lewis first hit the NACC Charts in 2021. Now their second LP sees them soar from 26-9 on the NACC 200 after debuting just one spot behind Brittany Howard’s highest debut last week. Harm’s Way gives them their first Top 10 on the NACC 200 after peaking painfully close at #11 with their debut release, Modern Fiction.
The week’s highest debut on the NACC 200 comes from Bristol, England-based quintet Idles. Begun in 2009 by Joe Talbot (who, contrary to popular belief, has no stake in the older ladies fashion mecca: Talbot’s) and Adam Devonshire. The band’s fifth studio release, Tangk (Partisan) pulls double-accomplishment duty this week collecting an impressive 80 Top 10 Adds (16 ahead of the #2 add) and simultaneously blasting onto the NACC 200 at #18. Honorable mention this week goes to longtime LA band Orgone who enjoy the week’s biggest climb on the NACC 200, up 162-55.
The two biggest movers into the NACC Top 20 this week round out our features this week. The third LP from English singer-songwriter Declan McKenna makes a strong 83-14 leap. McKenna first came on the scene in 2015 at the tender age of 17. His debut LP, What Do You Think About The Car? came out in 2017. His latest effort, which asks another difficult question, What Happened To The Beach? (Tomplicated/Sony), has been teased with a number of advance tracks that date back to July of 2023. The album recently debuted at #1 in Scotland, #3 in the UK and #6 in Ireland.
Also making waves on the chart this week is Sacramento-born musician Chelsea Wolfe. Her musical output dates back to 2009 and over the past 15 years she has released seven albums, including her uniquely-titled latest effort, She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She (Loma Vista/Concord). The title references “the past self reaching out to the present self reaching out to the future self to summon change, growth, and guidance” according to Wolfe herself. Her first album in five years explodes ahead 109-19 on the NACC 200 (the third-biggest climb on the chart this week) and has given us our very first opportunity to feature Wolfe in our weekly chart recap.
Atlanta, GA musician Faye Webster jumps from 5-1 on the NACC Singles Chart this week with the third preview track from her upcoming fifth LP, Underdressed At The Symphony, due March 1. “Lego Ring” features Lil Yachty and rises into the Top 30 of the overall NACC 200 as well. Three singles tie for most-added honors this week. The first is “R&B,” the fifth preview track from UK band English Teacher‘s debut album, This Could Be Texas (due April 12). This is a new recording of a song that was first released a few years ago. The second can be found on Vampire Weekend‘s first new album in five years. “Capricorn” is one of two previews songs that came out last week. Only God Was Above Us is out April 5. The third comes from Katie Crutchfield aka Waxahatchee. Her sixth LP, Tigers Blood, will be released March 22. “Bored” is the release’s second preview track.
