The race for #1 was a wild one this week, with three horses in the race. After being ousted from #1 last week, Bon Iver made a valiant effort to retake the top spot back from Japanese Breakfast, and they did indeed climb over them. But in the end, neither took the crown, with that distinction falling to Tunde Adebimpe. The TV On The Radio frontman and actor (who was most recently on TV in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew and on the big screen in Twisters) leapfrogged them both to land his first #1. His debut solo LP, Thee Black Boltz (Sub Pop), rose 3-1 in one of the closest races for #1 ever on the NACC 200. Just two points separate Adebimpe from Bon Iver. That ties for the second-smallest gap of all time between the top two records on the NACC 200.
Two new albums reach the NACC 200 Top 10 this week. The first comes from Seattle-based Car Seat Headrest. Fronted by Will Toledo, who began the project as a solo effort in 2010, the now quartet finds themselves back in the Top 10 of the chart with their 13th studio album, The Scholars (Matador). The 11-7 move gives the band their third straight Top 10-peaking album. They reached the top tier in 2018 and 2020 with their previous two LPs. They also hit the Top 5 at NACC NEXT this week, rising from 7-4.
Also reaching the Top 10 this week is the most-added album from two weeks ago. Sabrina Teitelbaum, who records as Blondshell, has reached the Top 10 for the first time with her sophomore effort, If You Asked For A Picture (Partisan). She soared ahead 96-14 last week and this week rises 14-10. Teitelbaum began her career as BAUM and was following a decidedly more pop direction at the time. Never liking the name or feeling completely confident in the music, she became Blondshell in 2020 and seems to have found a sound not only that she likes but many others do too.
This week’s highest debut comes from previous NACC 200 chart-toppers Arcade Fire. The wildly successful Montreal-based quintet has been making music together for nearly a quarter of a century and topped the chart in 2017 with their fifth album, Everything Now. Their most recent effort, 2022’s We, was also a highest debut on the NACC 200, opening at #23 but fell just short of the Top 10. Their latest self-released album, Pink Elephant, opens at #50. It’s the second-lowest top debut of the year, but still the highest debut this week!
This week’s most-added release comes from Irish quartet Mhaol. The band was formed in 2014 by Constance Keane and Róisín Nic Ghearailt, though only Keane remains in the band now (on drums/vocals) along with Jamie Hyland on bass/vocals, bassist Zoë Greenway, and guitarist Sean Nolan. This is our first opportunity to feature the band on our weekly NACC Chart Recap. Their second studio album, Something Soft (Merge), collects 38 Top 10 Adds and should make a nice debut on the next NACC 200.
Wet Leg commands the NACC Singles chart for a sixth straight week with “Catch These Fists,” which is now the longest run at the top this year. They also spring back up from 17-11 on the NACC 200. This is the first song from their second LP, moisturizer, due July 11. Just two of the 52 singles that went for adds this week reach the NACC 200 Top 30 Adds Chart. NYC trio Nation Of Language are back with “Inept Apollo.” The song helps announce the band’s signing to Sub Pop and an extensive 2025 tour that begins in August. “Inept Apollo” collects more Top 10 Adds than any other single this week. Only The Lemonheads join them on the NACC Adds Chart this week with their new bundled single.
