Wednesday’s Rat Saw God becomes the 10th Record of 2023 to Hit #1

The quick turnover at the top of the NACC 200 continues! In fact, this is the earliest in the year a 10th #1 has reached the penthouse. Previously, 2019 held that distinction when the 10th #1 of that year hit the top the week of May 14. In case you were wondering, the latest the 10th #1 reached the top was in 2021 when it took until August 31. The 10th #1 of 2023 belongs to Asheville, NC quartet Wednesday. Their name was inspired by 90s UK band The Sundays. Other days remain available if you and your band feel similarly inspired. Wednesday’s fifth LP, Rat Saw God (Dead Oceans/Secretly Group), rises 2-1 this week and in the process makes the New Pornographers the only band to have three or more NACC 200 chart-toppers that have all spent just a single week at #1.

Three albums reach the NACC Top 10 this week. The first is longtime Seattle quartet Mudhoney. We featured them for the very first time when they scored the highest debut on the chart, coming in at #30. Two weeks later they now enjoy the biggest climb into the Top 10, rising 19-9, with their 11th LP, Plastic Eternity (Sub Pop). Mudhoney’s inception dates back to 1988 after the demise of a band called Green River (which formed four years earlier). Its other members also went on to create a few bands you might have heard of including Temple Of The Dog, Mother Love Bone, and Pearl Jam.

Also reaching the NACC Top 10 this week is Turkish six-piece Altin Gün. The Amsterdam-based band formed in 2016 when bassist Jasper Verhulst posted an add on Facebook seeking fellow Turkish musicians. They have so far released five studio albums, all with one-word titles. Their latest, Aşk (ATO), rises 14-8 on the NACC 200. It also spends a fourth week atop the NACC World Chart, climbs 5-3 at NACC Non-Comm, and enjoys the biggest climb at NACC NEXT, jumping 30-14.

Our final new Top 10 entry this week comes from Chicago’s Fruit Bats. Started by sole permanent member Eric D. Johnson in 1997, Fruit Bats utilizes various musicians joining Johnson in studio and live settings. Since the band’s debut album, Echolocation in 2001, Fruit Bats has released ten LPs, including this latest release, A River Running To Your Heart (Merge). The album rises 15-10 this week.

It’s a banner week for Asheville, NC musicians. After featuring Wednesday earlier, now we have the pleasure of highlighting another of the city’s talents. This week’s most-added album comes from Indigo De Souza. She started making music professionally in 2016. Her third album, All Of This Will End (Saddle Creek), collects more Top 10 adds (by far) than any other album going for adds this week. Her 28 add lead over the next most-added artist is the biggest dating back to mid November. She also scores the third-highest debut of the week on the NACC 200 at #53.

Arlo Parks is the first artist to reach #1 twice this year on NACC Singles. “Blades,” the third preview track from her upcoming sophomore LP, The Soft Machine (due May 26), leaps 10-1. The song is also the biggest climber on the NACC 200 this week, jumping from 146-48. This week’s most-added single is a teaming of Thundercat and Tame Impala. Their collaboration is the first official Thundercat single since 2020. The song collects 22 Adds this week and narrowly misses the Top 10 overall adds for the week.

The current Top 5 overall NACC Adds, the genre chart-toppers, and the week’s most-added genre records are included below. In addition to a rebound to #1 at Blues there are new chart-toppers this week at NACC Non-Comm, NACC NEXT, NACC Canadian, Folk, Hip Hop, Jazz, Latin, & R&B/Soul,
