NACC 200 #1 Battle: Mitski vs Gorillaz (Round 3)

NACC 200 NOTABLES:

1] Mitski enjoys her most comfortable week at #1 over the last four that she’s been atop the NACC 200. Her eighth LP, Nothing’s About To Happen To Me, more than doubles the point lead it held last week over Gorillaz. In doing so, she reaches a milestone 20th cumulative week at #1 on the NACC 200 over four consecutive #1 albums. That’s a full five weeks ahead of the next-closest artist, Arlo Parks, with 15 weeks. Her album also spends a second week at #1 on NACC Non-Comm and rises 2-1 on NACC NEXT.

2] Just one album reaches the NACC Top 10 this week. It belongs to the Chicago quartet Brigitte Calls Me Baby. Their sophomore album, Irreversible, was the highest debut on the chart two weeks ago and has now become their second Top 10-peaking album, following their 2024 debut, The Future Is Our Way Out, as it rises 14-8.

3] Aussie singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett has had a strong presence on the NACC 200, and her fourth solo LP, Creature Of Habit, is keeping that story going. Her 2018 release, Tell Me How You Really Feel, is still one of the longest-running #1 albums on the chart, spending seven weeks at the top. This is our 14th time featuring her in our weekly Wednesday NACC Chart Recap. It happens because her new album opens at #15 on the NACC 200, the highest debut of the week.

4] Making the biggest climb on the NACC 200 this week is San Francisco-born, Arizona-raised DJ & music producer Avalon Emerson. Her second studio album, Written Into Changes, jumps from 146-38 on the chart, allowing us to feature her for the first time here. Since she began releasing music in 2014, she has released nine EPs and a mix album alongside her two LPs.

5] Taking ‘Most-Added’ honors this week is Lindsey Jordan, who records as Snail Mail. She’s enjoyed great success on the NACC 200. Her first two LPs, 2018’s Lush and 2021’s Valentine, both reached the Top 10 of the chart. Now, after a five-year absence (though she did release a cover of Smashing Pumpkins’ “Tonight, Tonight” in 2024), Snail Mail is back in a big way. Her third studio album, Ricochet, collects a week-best 72 NACC Top 10 Adds and explodes onto the NACC 200 at #19 this week.

GENRE CHART HIGHLIGHTS:

1] For the fifth week in a row, we have a different #1 atop the NACC Singles Chart. This week, Bellingham, WA quintet Death Cab For Cutie returns with the first single from their 11th LP, I Built You A Tower. Their first single in three years, “Riptides,” jumps 5-1 at NACC Singles and rises 32-17 on the NACC 200 as the only single in the Top 20 this week.

2] Eric Hilton is the only artist to top two of our genre charts simultaneously this week. The co-founder of Thievery Corporation (for which he has nine releases) has been busy outside that project as well, releasing nine solo albums in only the past 5 or 6 years. His latest, A Sky So Close, rises 4-1 on NACC Electronic and returns to #1 on NACC Chill, leaping back 14-1 for a second week on top.

3] Two pinnacle longtime artists in their respective genres reach #1 this week. Thrash metal band Exodus (active since 1979) rises 4-1 on NACC Heavy with their 13th LP, Goliath. And Sam Beam, better known as Iron & Wine, climbs 2-1 at NACC Folk with his eighth solo studio album and 11th overall, Hen’s House. The album recently reached #1 on NACC Non-Comm as well.
